3 Common Reasons Why You Might Be Struggling To Get Your First Push-Up, And Improve Your Push-Up Form!

As I discussed above, in order to achieve your push-up specific goals, you need to perform exercises that are specific to push-ups, and you need to perform these exercises correctly. Both specificity and proper form are paramount to your success. This was also a HUGE focus in The Ultimate Pull-Up Program. 


Here are three common reasons why you might not be achieving your push-up goals. These mistakes are relevant to people of all genders, ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds, NOT just beginners. I could have included MANY other errors. These are also mistakes I see many coaches making with their clients.

 

Reason #1: Weak Core Muscles/ Lack Of Lumbo-Pelvic Stability

Did you know the push-up is a moving plank? In order to perform this exercise to your full potential, your body needs to remain in a plank position for the duration of the exercise. This is much easier said than done. When many people do push-ups, they lose the ever-important plank position and hinge through their lower or mid back, flare their ribcage, rotate their torso, spine, or hips, pike or drop their hips, drop their head, or a combination of the above. So rather than looking like a "plank," they more closely resemble a Slinky or floppy sandbag. I also used this analogy with the pull-up. 


In order to thrive at push-ups, you need a strong core. Glute strength also plays a key role.  I am only using the word “core” as I know this is a term many people understand. Being able to keep your torso, spine, and hips in a stable (and intentionally rigid) position is essential to your push-up success, and I refer to this as lumbo-pelvic stability. Lumbo-pelvic stability is a massively overlooked ingredient in push-up performance. 


Just to highlight how impactful lumbo-pelvic stability is, I recently achieved a goal of doing a 100 lb weighted push-up. A huge reason why I was able to reach this milestone is because my “core” muscles and glutes are very strong, so I was able to maintain a plank despite having 100 lbs on my back.

Reason #2: Relying On Kneeling Push-Ups

Have you been doing kneeling push-ups “forever,” yet when you attempt to progress to doing regular push-ups they feel absolutely impossible? I'm sure many people can relate, and there is a reason for this. Kneeling push-ups are not specific enough to regular push-ups. 

  

With kneeling push-ups, by placing your knees on the floor your body’s lever is dramatically shortened. This removes much of the lumbo-pelvic stability (think core strength) that is required during regular push-ups. As a result, people who rely on kneeling push-ups often struggle as they do not possess the necessary level of lumbo-pelvic stability that is needed when the body's lever is longer. In short, they cannot maintain the plank position. 


In my 20+ years of coaching THOUSANDS of people, I’ve found that hands elevated push-ups have a significantly greater carryover to regular push-ups than kneeling push-ups. A huge bonus is that regressing or progressing hands elevated push-ups is very easy to do. In order to regress or progress the exercise, you simply increase or decrease the height of the surface you are using. This will allow you to move from A to Z very seamlessly, and at your own pace. 


In Phase 1 of The Ultimate Push-Up Program, I am giving you my top push-up specific regressions. These exercises are very specific to regular push-ups, and will give you the building blocks and tools so you can perform regular push-ups from the floor, and more advanced variations.

Reason #3: Poor Scapular Controlled Movement

When you look around most commercial gyms, personal training studios, and on social media, it’s so common to see people doing push-ups and their elbows are flaring out, their shoulders are rolling forward or are shrugging towards the ears, their shoulder blades are winging out or are caving in, or their shoulder blades are remaining in a fixed position so they are performing reps using a tiny range of motion, also known as "cheat reps." Maybe you’ve noticed one or many of these issues when you’ve been doing push-ups?

 

Guess what, lacking the muscular strength and also body awareness to control the movement of your shoulder blades could be why you are making some or all of these mistakes. Scapular controlled movement is a huge factor in performing push-ups properly, powerfully, and athletically, and while keeping your body feeling healthy and happy. Overlooking this key area will compromise your push-up performance, and can place your muscles and joints under needless stress. The Ultimate Push-Up Program addresses and troubleshoots scapular controlled mobility and shoulder health very thoroughly. 

 

Now let me get back to "cheat" reps. This is something many people do. When I use this term, I’m referring to reps where a very small range of motion is being used. Sometimes this breakdown in form occurs due to "ego-training," but much of the time this issue results from poor scapular controlled movement. Many people aggressively draw their shoulder blades together and lock them in this position for the entire exercise. When this happens, pressing up to the top position and fully extending the elbows is next to impossible. During the "pressing" component and lockout, your shoulder blades need to spread apart. This is known as protraction. Using a poor range of motion will rob you in gains of strength, athleticism, and muscle building.

Can The Ultimate Push-Up Program Be Done At Home?

Absolutely! The Ultimate Push-Up Program is VERY home-workout friendly. Many of the exercises in The Ultimate Push-Up Program use bodyweight only. This includes many of the advanced exercises.


While some exercises use dumbbells, a kettlebell, resistance band, TRX, or a pull-up bar, these exercises are VERY modifiable and can be adapted to meet the equipment you have at your disposal. In the program, for certain exercises I provide you with an alternative option (and include a full write-up and video). But if you need another option, I will gladly provide one. 


This program can also be done at the gym. 

How Long Will Each Phase Take? How Long Will Each Workout Take? 

A general guideline for each phase is 4-12 weeks. Some phases may be faster and some slower depending on your fitness level and technical ability. It is not a race, so take your time. Most exercises can be made more challenging by adding more resistance (or a band), by altering the tempo, or by performing the high end of the rep range. For the push-up regressions in Phase 1, if you can perform 100% of your reps with good form, you may move on to the next phase’s push-up variations. 


Each workout generally takes around 35-45 minutes to complete. If you add in extra exercises, or have a customized warm-up or cool-down, this will increase the overall length of your workout. 

Is The Ultimate Push-Up Program Suitable For People Who Can Already Do Push-Ups? 

Yes! If you can already do push-ups,   you will get to learn many different advanced, innovative, and extremely effective push-up variations. You will likely also improve your current push-up form so you will be able to perform more reps, and more efficiently.  


I am also giving you many exercises that target your entire body, but most notably, your core muscles and upper body.
